I learned from my mother, who could feed an army on a shoestring. I remember the "MONTHLY GROCERY" shopping that she did. Two Carts full of food from the local Food Lion. If I was good and helped her out, I got microwave chicken nuggets, or one candy bar. In addition to knowing how to shop my mother also knew how to tease the slave labor.
Anyway.. After many summers spent dutifully pushing the second cart around the Food Lion in and picking up the cheapest cans of my half of the list, I learned how to grocery shop like a pro as well.
When I was on my own at 16, I made $35 in the local Harris Teeter go pretty far. Granted there was a fair amount of 69 cent pizza in my basket that was dressed up with crushed pineapple and green pepper. But you get the point. When I lived with the Large Angry Man for a while, and we split groceries, we ate like kings.. He would hand me whatever he had at the end of the week and a list of requests, I would match what he gave me and then go to the really nice Harris Teeter at the bottom of the big hill. I could get the whole list taken care of and have extra left over for things like Shrimp and Prime Rib and beer..
Yep, mmm food...
For some reason, I lost this talent... i don't know exactly when..
I think some time around the time I moved into Purchased Pad and then moved to my current abode.. I never really got the grocery shopping down at Purchased Pad due to the Refrigerator situation. And then I moved here and never really got it down again because of the $$ situation. That is, until recently...
Yesterday Best Boy and I decided to swear off fast food for at least a month. Since what we spend in a month on take out is far more then what we'd spend grocery shopping (even weekly) at my part time job, we're doing the bulk of our shopping there and trying to see how much we can save..
It felt good yesterday to wander around figure out what we needed and then come home and have a frig full of yummy food to make for the week.. And I only forgot two things!
oh, and lunch today, the best f'n turkey sandwich ever..
mmm..
